Rapanui people in Easter Island approve the creation of a 700.000 km2 marine protected area, in historic poll
The protected area will cover the entire Exclusive Economic Zone around the island. Due to their isolation and little connection with other islands, Easter Island’s coral ecosystems and its unique species, as well as ancestral fishing practices, will be protected. "The purpose of this public consultation is to respect the will of the Rapanui people to create a marine protected area that respects the ancestral use of the sea and its fishing habits. It is also part of the commitment and the seal of the Chilean government to consolidate a form of collaborative and respectful work with the communities", Minister Mena said.
